ABOUT CAMBODIA

LOCATED BETWEEN THAILAND, VIETNAM AND LAOS ON THE INDOCHINESE PENINSULA, CAMBODIA IS A COUNTRY WITH A RICH HISTORY. UNDER KHMER RULE FROM ABOUT 600 A.D. TO 1200, CAMBODIA WAS AT THE CENTER OF A VAST EMPIRE. IN THE LATTER PART OF THEIR REIGN, THE KHMERS, WHO WERE HINDUS, BUILT GREAT TEMPLE CITIES WITH SOPHISTICATED WATER SYSTEMS. BY THE END OF THE 12TH CENTURY, CAMBODIA EMBRACED BUDDHISM AND THE TEMPLES CHANGED WITH THE TIMES. THAI AND VIETNAMESE INVADERS. ALONG WITH DROUGHT, SLOWLY ERODED CAMBODIA’S INFLUENCE ON THE REGION AND BY THE MID-1800’S FRANCE COLONIZED THE REGION. THE COUNTRY REGAINED ITS INDEPENDENCE IN 1949 BUT REMAINED IN A FRENCH COLONY. TOTAL INDEPENDENCE WAS GAINED AFTER THE END OF THE FIRST INDOCHINA WAR IN 1954.

DESPITE DECLARING ITSELF NEUTRAL, CAMBODIA WAS SLOWLY DRAWN INTO THE VIETNAMESE WAR BY NORTH VIETNAM AND THE VIET CONG, WHO WERE USING EASTERN CAMBODIA AS A STAGING AREA. DURING THIS TIME, THE KHMER ROUGE, A LOCAL COMMUNIST GUERILLA GROUP, OVERTHREW THE GOVERNMENT AND SEIZED POWER. THE KHMER ROUGE DEVASTATED THE POPULATION, MASSACRING APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD OF ITS PEOPLE. IN 1979, THE VIETNAMESE OUSTED THE KHMER ROUGE AND INSTALLED A PRO-HANOI GOVERNMENT WHICH REMAINED IN POWER UNTIL 1993. FREE ELECTIONS WERE HELD IN MAY OF 1993 AND THE COUNTY HAS REMAINED A DEMOCRACY SINCE.

GEOGRAPHICALLY, THE COUNTRY IS MAINLY A PLANE, CENTERED AROUND TONLE SAP, THE LARGEST FRESHWATER LAKE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA AND IS SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS. CAMBODIA’S BIODIVERSITY IS CENTERED AROUND TONLE SAP, LOCATED 10 KM FROM THE TEMPLES AT ANGKOR WAT. THIS AREA IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMY.
